Ward County 4-H has multiple wins at judging contest
Ward County was well represented by the 4-H Crops and Livestock Judging teams at the Northwest Judging Contest held in Stanley on Feb. 1.
Both crops and livestock judging are split into two age groups of Junior 8 to 13 and Senior 14 to 18.
In Crops Judging, contestants must identify crops and weeds by the seeds, insects, equipment and machinery, different types of crop disorders, and market grade factors for wheat and durum. Winning the Junior Crops contest was Mark Schauer, Carpio. Placing third was Abby Finke, Berthold. Placing fifth was Daylon Yanish, Carpio, and sixth place was Makayla White, Berthold. Overall, the team of Schauer, Finke, Yanish and White won the Junior Crops Judging team division.
In Livestock Judging, contestants analyze four animals of different livestock species including beef cattle, hogs, goats and sheep. They must rank the animals of each species first through fourth place. After placing their class, the contestant must present reasons to a judge explaining why they placed the class the way they did. Ward and Mountrail County youth combined to form complete Senior and Junior Livestock teams.
Winning the Senior Livestock contest was Fletcher Hennessy, Des Lacs. Placing second place was Calli Hennessy, Stanley. Placing third was Mariah Braasch, Minot. Fifth place was Ty Fladeland, Stanley, and seventh place was Morgan Vachal, Ross. The team of F. Hennessy, C. Hennessy, M. Braasch, Fladeland and Vachal won the Senior Livestock Judging team division.
Winning the Junior Livestock Judging contest was Avah Bullinger, Powers Lake. Placing fourth was Amber Braasch, Minot. Placing fifth was Sutton Hennessy, Des Lacs. The team of Bullinger, A. Braasch, and S. Hennessy won the Junior Livestock Judging team division.
