Souris flood risk remains low

The National Weather Service issued a new Flood Potential Outlook for the Souris River basin on Thursday. As expected, the risk of flooding this spring along the Souris remains very low.

According to the outlook the risk of major flooding at all reporting points along the Souris and Des Lacs Rivers is 5% or less with the exception of the final reporting point on the Souris in North Dakota – Westhope. There the possibility of reaching major flood stage is listed at 13%.

Most of the flooding risk, says the outlook, is associated with the possibility of heavy rains during the early spring where the soils are still wet and frozen.
