A former commander of Minot Air Force Base’s missile wing has been selected as commander of 20th Air Force.

Maj. Gen. Michael J. Lutton’s new assignment was announced recently by Gen. David Goldfein, chief of staff of the Air Force.

Since July 2018, Lutton has been deputy director for Nuclear and Homeland Defense Operations, the Joint Staff, at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.

He was commander of the 91st Missile Wing at Minot AFB from June 2014-June 2016.

Twentieth Air Force has its headquarters at F.E. Warren AFB, Wyo., in the Cheyenne, Wyo., community. It is responsible for the nation’s three intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) wings (Minot AFB, Malmstrom AFB, Mont., and F.E. Warren AFB) and one nuclear operations support wing (Kirtland AFB, N.M.), according to 20th Air Force information.

As the missile numbered air force for Air Force Global Strike Command headquartered at Barksdale AFB, La., 20th Air Force is responsible for operating, maintaining, securing and supporting the Air Force’s ICBM force. Twentieth Air Force provides on-alert, combat-ready ICBMs to the president.

Approximately 10,600 personnel are assigned to 20th Air Force.
