Investigators say airman not involved in crime in Sacramento

Investigators with the Sacramento Police Department said a Minot Air Force Base airman found seriously injured in a ditch near Pine Grove, Calif., last week, was not involved in a crime in Sacramento.

Keith Keiffer, 32, had a head injury and didn’t know his name or where he was when he was found in the ditch on Jan. 22, according to Califonia media. He was taken to a Jackson, Calif., hospital. Police learned his name after posting a story and photo of him on Facebook. Keiffer claimed he was the victim of a serious crime in the Sacramento area. Keiffer was released from the hospital last week and is in the care of Travis AFB, Calif., where he had been stationed prior to Minot AFB.

“Our investigators have determined that no crime has occurred within the city limits of Sacramento,” according to a spokesman at the Sacramento Police Department in an email to The Minot Daily News on Tuesday.

Authorities said earlier Kieffer was in Sacramento to get a U-Haul to move personal belongings to his new assignment.

Pine Grove in Amador County, Calif., is about 50 miles southeast of Sacramento. Jackson is about 120 miles from Travis AFB.
