ND sailor on ship attacked at Pearl Harbor accounted for

A sailor from Mandan who was on the USS West Virginia battleship during the attack at Pearl Harbor has been accounted for, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency announced on Thursday.

Navy Fireman 2nd Class Albert Renner, 24, was assigned to the battleship, which was moored at Ford Island, Pearl Harbor, when the ship was attacked by Japanese aircraft on Dec. 7, 1941. The attack on the ship resulted in the deaths of 106 crewmen, including Renner.

During efforts to salvage the ship, Navy personnel recovered the remains of the deceased crrewmen, representing at least 66 individuals. Those who could not be identified, including Renner, were interred as unknowns at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, known as the Punchbowl, in Honolulu.

In 2017, Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency, in cooperation with cemetery officials, transferred a number of the remains including Renner to the laboratory for identification. His remains were accounted for on Aug. 19, 2019.

Renner’s funeral date and location have yet to be determined.
