Tonya Legard, Minot, sentenced for theft

Tonya Kate Legard, 49, Minot, was sentenced on Wednesday to 360 days in jail, all suspended but the 40 days she has already served in the Ward County Jail, and 18 months of supervised probation for stealing more than $1,000 from the Minot Walmart on Aug. 1.

According to court documents, Legard pretended to scan items in the self checkout lane and then placed them back in her cart and left the store without paying. She was stopped by a loss prevention clerk and taken into custody. Legard told police she thought she was allowed to have the items in appreciation for her work in stopping human trafficking.

Restitution in the case is reserved for 90 days.

Judge Gary Lee also ordered Legard to pay $825 in court costs.

If Legard successfully completes probation, the C felony theft charge will be reduced to a Class A misdemeanor.
