Victims of murder/suicide incident in Ryder identified

The Ward County Sheriff’s Department has identified the victims of a shooting incident occurring at the Ryder Star Bar in Ryder on Thursday night.

The victims were Danial Wayne Peterson, 49, Makoti, and Thomas Lee Huston, 32, both of Makoti, according to a sheriff’s Department news release.

Although the investigation is still ongoing, it is clear the incident was between the two men, the news release said.

According to the sheriff’s department, video of the incident shows Huston arriving and entering the bar shortly before a 911 call was made that a male had been shot and the suspect had left the bar. Huston confronted Peterson and a short physical confrontation ensued. Huston started to walk toward the bar door and circled back around approaching Peterson, brandished a handgun and fired the weapon one time, striking and subsequently killing Peterson. Huston then existed the bar, walking to the area of the vehicle he arrived in, fired one more round from the handgun and then collapsed near the rear of the vehicle and subsequently died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

When a deputy arrived, he located a male on the ground who was deceased next to a parked car with an apparent gunshot.

The incident happened about 10:15 p.m.

Currently there are no additional suspects in the incident and the investigators are continuing their investigation into the incident.

If anyone has any information into the incident, they are asked to contact the Ward County Sheriff’s Department in Minot.
