Levi Hillestad, Minot, sentenced for aggravated assault

Levi James Hillestad, 37, Minot, entered an Alford plea to a Class C felony aggravated assault charge on Wednesday and was sentenced to 360 days in jail, all suspended but 30 days, and 18 months supervised probation.

North Central District Court Judge Richard Hagar also ordered Hillestad to complete a domestic violence offenders class and pay $1,100 in court costs, court records show.

Hillestad hit a woman in the head, tried to strangle her with a belt, and broke both her cell phone and is own when she tried to call 911 on Oct. 1. Hillestad and the woman had been arguing over a pack of cigarettes. The woman had blood on her face, marks on her neck, and scratches on her hands, arms, and legs, according to court documents. The woman told police she was not afraid for her life when Hillestad strangled her because it was not the first time he had strangled her. She said she bit Hillestad on the arm to make him let her go.
