Daniel Gade to speak at Minot’s Memorial Day program

Retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. Daniel Gade, currently senior advisor with the U.S. Department of Labor, will give the address at Minot’s Memorial Day program on Monday at 10:30 a.m. at the original Veterans Section in Rosehill Memorial Park.

Gade, a native of Minot, graduated from Minot High School and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. He also has a master’s and doctorate degrees in public policy from the University of Georgia. During his 20 years on active duty, he led units in Colorado, Korea and Iraq, where he was decorated for valor and wounded in action twice. Following his second wounding, he spent almost a year in the hospital. He returned to active duty and taught for more than five years at West Point until his retirement in 2017. He served for a year as an associate director of the White House Domestic Policy Council. Gade’s now writing a book on veterans’ affairs and working at the U.S. Department of Labor while he awaits Senate confirmation on an appointment by President Trump as commissioner of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in Washington, D.C.

Gade, whose right leg was amputated as a result of his second wounding in Iraq, has participated in Iron Man competitions, ridden his bike across America in eight days for Project Red, White and Blue, and participated in the Bush Warrior 100k ride several times.

He will also be the commencement speaker on Sunday at Our Redeemers Christian School’s at 1 p.m. He attended Our Redeemers for several years.

Loren Headrick, commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 753, will be master of ceremonies for the Memorial Day program. Others in the program will include Minot veterans organizations and auxiliaries, Pastor Dan Chell of Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Brethren Church, Anthony Weisser, John and Matthew Jermiason, Peggy Headrick, VFW Post 753 Auxiliary president, McKenna Yarham and Steve Veikley.

The Strewing of the Flowers Ceremony, conducted by the VFW and Auxiliary, will be held Monday at 8 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial Walkway, formerly the Eighth Street Northwest Bridge. The ceremony is symbolic and in remembrance of the soldiers and sailors lost at sea.

Other Memorial Day programs planned in area communities on Monday include:

DRAKE: The program will be held at 10:30 a.m. in Drake City Hall with a speaker from Minot Air Force Base. Lunch will follow the cemetery program. The public is welcome.

LANSFORD: Kenneth L. Renz American Legion Post 279 will conduct services at 11 a.m. in the Lansford Community Center with Adam Schumann, a graduate of Glenburn High School, as speaker. Schumann served in the Army as a staff sergeant in the 2nd Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He is the subject of David Finkel’s novel, “Thank You For Your Service,” which was made into a movie of the same name. Cemetery services will follow the program, weather permitting. Lansford Cafe will be open that day.

SHERWOOD: American Legion Bothun-Peterson Post 213 will conduct Memorial Day services This is the 81st annual celebration being conducted with Canadian counterparts. The day begins at 10 a.m. with a flag ceremony at the U.S./Canada border. A program follows at 10:30 a.m. in the Sherwood School gymnasium with Roberta Taylor, president of the Canadian Legion, Saskatchewan Command, as featured speaker. Others in the program include Father Adam Maus, Commander Dwight Knutson, a Canadian Legionnaire representative, Wayne Artz, Ron Heller, Brian Miller, Kalli Smith, Jarett and Steve Keith and the Community Choir accompanied by Shan Haarsager. American and Canadian Legions will retire the colors. A parade down Main Street, weather permitting, a ceremony at the Firemen’s Memorial and services at the cemetery will follow the program. Lunch will be served in the Sherwood Memorial Hall after the cemetery services.

WILLOW CITY: Lyle B. Rich Post 112 American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary will present a program at 10 a.m. in the Willow City Community Hall. The program is open to everyone.
