Minot men arrested on multiple charges after chase

Three Minot men were arrested Friday following a chase that involved multiple law enforcement agencies.

According to Minot police, Shawn J. Berryhill, 27, is charged with possession of methamphetamine with intent to deliver, a Class A felony, fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, a Class C felony, two counts of Class C felony reckless endangerment, theft of a motor vehicle, a Class C felony, refusal to halt, a class B misdemeanor and driving with a suspended license, a Class B misdemeanor.

Ryan Guttormson, 29, is charged with refusal to halt, a Class B misdemeanor.

Cody McCauley, 20, is charged with possession of methamphetamine, a Class C felony, and refusal to halt, a Class B misdemeanor.

The incident began at 8:11 a.m. Friday when Ward County deputies responded to a burglary in the 3500 block of 48th Street SE. According to the sheriff’s office, a person at that location reported the building had been burglarized and that a 2008 black Corvette had been stolen from the residence.

While deputies were investigating, they received a report that shots had been fired at 9:18 a.m. between two vehicles located in the area of 13th Street and 233 Avenue SE in Max. Ward County deputies then headed toward that area. As they were approaching, someone reported that one of the vehicles involved in the shooting incident was headed east. A deputy located a Pontiac Grand Prix with three men in it. The vehicle fled when he tried to stop it. Law enforcement pursued and saw the occupants of the fleeing vehicle tossing drug paraphernalia and electronics out the car windows.

The chase headed east into McHenry County. McHenry County deputies and North Dakota Highway Patrol officers joined in the chase. When the car neared Surrey, Surrey police officers also set up in an attempt to stop the vehicle.

The vehicle ended up on 11th Avenue SE near the Sundre Addition. According to Minot police, an officer attempted to use tire deflation spikes to stop the fleeing vehicle and was nearly struck when the vehicle swerved in an alleged attempt to hit him while he was standing on the side of the road. The officer suffered a knee injury when he was trying to get away from the vehicle.

Minot police became involved in an active pursuit when the vehicle came back into the city of Minot. Officers received information that the vehicle was in the area of the 1300 block of South Broadway. Within minutes, they located the vehicle parked near a residence in the 1400 block of 7th Street SW. Detectives responded to the scene where the vehicle was located and saw Berryhill, Guttormson and McCauley walking in the area. Police ordered them to halt and the men fled. McCauley and Guttormson tried to hide under a porch at a residence and Berryhill tried to hide in a vehicle parked at the residence. Berryhill had a knife, so Minot police broke the vehicle window and used a Taser on Berryhill to take him into custody.

Berryhill could face more than 40 years in prison if convicted of all the charges against him. McCauley could face more than five years in prison. Guttormson could face 30 days in jail.
