Committee rejects license for Sidekicks
A city committee’s rejection of a liquor license renewal for a Minot bar was almost a moot point Wednesday.
The Minot City Council’s Liquor and Gambling Control Committee voted to recommend the council deny a license renewal to Sidekicks Lounge, whose license is tied to the neighboring Magic City Hotel. The hotel does not meet ordinance requirements to support the liquor license, and has not for some time.
On Wednesday, the committee learned a principal in Shine Time, the applicant in the Sidekicks license renewal, had withdrawn his signature on the application. However, the signature hadn’t been notarized as required, so the committee questioned whether the application was valid anyway.
“I don’t care if they signed it correctly or not because I would never give them a license,” said committee member David Shomento. He said the business has closed, and trucks were seen moving items out of the building.
Although Sidekicks has had a hotel liquor license, it is separately owned from Magic City Hotel. City ordinance requires a hotel to have at least 100 rooms. A motel must have at least 50 rooms and a restaurant.
According to a Minot Police Department investigation in early June, Magic City Hotel had only 37 functional rooms. There also is no integrated restaurant that is part of the business.
The hotel had been closed for a time last year and had only partially re-opened. The city had been allowing Sidekicks to operate conditionally since December, giving the hotel until June 1 to come into compliance.
