Chatty “Rebel 1” felon reportedly busted fleeing crime scene

Bond was set at $20,000 cash or corporate surety Tuesday for Christopher Ryan Olson, 20, who is accused of robbing a Minot convenience store on Monday and telling the clerk he would “blow your f– head off” if she didn’t get the register open fast enough.

According to a criminal affidavit filed with the court, a Minot police officer was patrolling the area near the Rebel 1 convenience store at 2625 North Broadway when he spotted two men running from the gas station. The men were wearing dark clothing and had ski masks covering their faces. The officer also observed what appeared to be a large amount of paper bills in one man’s hands. The officer called the robbery into police dispatch and pursued the suspects. He left the vehicle and gave chase on foot, but the men didn’t stop. The officer said he tackled Olson in front of the driveway at 2617-4th St. NW, but the other man got away from him.

According to the affidavit, Olson said, “You got me! I’m not going to go anywhere,” while the officer was trying to gain physical control of him. The officer wrote that he handcuffed Olson and pulled the ski mask off his face. He asked the man to identify himself and Olson gave his name and then said “I’m on felony probation and now I am going back to the pen! F–!”

Police later spoke to the gas station clerk, who told them that two men entered the store and demanded that she open the register. She said Olson threatened to shoot her in the head if she didn’t open one fast enough. After the clerk opened one register, she said the other man told her to open the other register. After watching the surveillance video, police determined that Olson was the man who made the threat, according to the affidavit.

After searching Olson, the police recovered $384 in bills from Olson along with the black ski mask and marijuana paraphernalia, according to the affidavit.

Police say Olson was charged with robbery, a Class B felony, because he acted like he had a firearm and threatened to shoot the clerk with it. He is also charged with refusal to halt, a Class B misdemeanor, and possession of marijuana paraphernalia, a Class B misdemeanor.

This was the fourth convenience store robbery in Minot within six days.

According to Minot police, the Cenex station at 205-20th Ave. SE was robbed at about 7:32 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 20. The two suspects entered the store and demanded money. They were wearing hooded sweatshirts and face masks. No weapons were displayed to the employees during the robbery. The two suspects fled the scene prior to the arrival of the police officers. There were no injuries reported. An undisclosed amount of cash was taken from the business.

The Gas Stop on South Broadway at 9:32 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 18. Police say the store was robbed by a suspect wearing a tan coat and ski mask. No injuries were reported during that robbery and no weapon was displayed by the suspect, who fled with an undisclosed amount of money.

The first robbery was reported on Wednesday, Dec. 16. According to police, two suspects wearing gray jackets and black ski masks robbed the Simonson’s Station at 1310 South Broadway at 9:48 p.m. that day. They brandished a firearm and fled the store with an undisclosed amount of money.

Police previously said that the three earlier robberies were considered to be related. Olson has not been charged with the previous robberies. Olson told the arresting officer that he does not know who was with him, according to the affidavit. He said their car had been parked at 4th St. NW and 27th Ave. NW but it was now gone.

Court records list Olson’s current address as Tower City.

According to court records, Olson is currently on probation for burglary. He pleaded guilty on Oct. 2 to the Class C felony charge and North Central District Court Judge Stacy Louser sentenced to 18 months of supervised probation. If he successfully completes probation, the offense will be deemed a misdemeanor.

In court on Tuesday, Olson told Judge Richard Hagar that he hoped for a lower bond. He said he has never missed a court date in his previous felony case.

Hagar said that might be true but he was also concerned that Olson might pose a danger to the community.

If Olson gets out on bond, Hagar has also forbidden him from going near the store at 2625 North Broadway. When Hagar asked Ward County Assistant State’s Attorney Caitlyn Pierson for the name of the business to put in the no contact order, Olson told the judge it was “Rebel 1.”
