Leaking pipe causes produced water brine spill

ARNEGARD A leaking pipe led to a spill of about 42,000 gallons of produced water brine near Arnegard.

The North Dakota Department of Health received a report of the produced water brine leak caused by a corroded pipe connection at a well site owned by Oasis Energy in McKenzie County.

About 1,000 barrels or about 42,000 gallons of brine were estimated to have been released at the site located about 11 miles northwest of Arnegard.

Much of the produced water brine was contained and recovered on the pad, but an unknown amount spilled over onto adjacent land and impacted a nearby stream, Health Department officials said.

Inspectors from the North Dakota Department of Health and the N.D. Department of Mineral Resources’ Oil and Gas Division, were at the site, according to a Health Department news release issued Thursday. They will work with the company on remediation.
