The subtle deception we all face

My greatest fears and life wounds are: the fear of rejection, abandonment, loneliness and failure. Growing up I felt “poor” so my entire life the spirit of money has whispered in my ear that money would protect me from my fears; money would insulate me from the pain of rejection, abandonment and loneliness, and as long as I had money I would never feel like a failure. Is that true? Of course not! Money makes promises it is unable to deliver with the goal of ruling our lives. This is exactly why Jesus said we cannot serve God and money. There have been times in my life, through the ...

Dad’s penchant for poetry kept me attuned

My father, if alive, would have been 83 today. It’s been five and a half years since his death, but sometimes he still feels so near.
Dad’s influence drew me to local poet Timothy Murphy. Though they never met, each time I visited Tim, Dad’s ghost seemed within reach. It was Dad, after all, who first taught me to attune my ear to the rhythms of the written word, especially through poetry. Though not prolific like Tim, Dad might have been if he’d pursued his talent wholeheartedly. My sister and I once uncovered volumes of poems he’d written, including romantic ones to my ...

Study: US religious orders overwhelmingly back women deacons

VATICAN CITY (AP) — A new survey has found that the majority of U.S. Catholic religious orders believe women should be allowed to serve as ordained deacons, lending support to an issue currently under study at the Vatican amid pressure for women to be given greater roles in the church. Revealing dreams, revealing fears

I have two recurring dreams. In the first dream, I show up to attend a church service and someone tells me that I am preaching. I calmly reply no, I am only here to attend. Others enter the discussion and soon everyone is convinced I am supposed to speak. the more I resist, the more they insist. As the service starts, everyone sits and waits until I get up and say something. Sometimes I go ahead and speak, and I crash and burn. I have nothing to say, and what I do say makes no sense. All these eyes are staring at me, judging me as a loser and I am publicly embarrassed. Sometimes in ...

Former Seattle Archbishop Raymond Hunthausen dies at 96

SEATTLE (AP) — Retired Seattle Archbishop Raymond G. Hunthausen, whose outspoken support for nuclear disarmament, gay rights and an expanded role for women in the church made him one of the most controversial U.S. bishops, has died at 96.
