“Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall. Humpty Dumpty had a great fall. All the king’s horses and all the king’s men, couldn’t put Humpty back together again.”

What was Humpty Dumpty pursuing that led him to scale a dangerous wall? Was he in avid pursuit of popularity? Money and possessions? His dream position? Pleasure?

I don’t think Humpty woke up one morning and said, “I’m going to climb a dangerous wall and hope I don’t fall to pieces.” I think he took a small step in that direction, then another, maybe a few more steps, then started jogging, and next thing there he was-out on a ledge and over the edge.

Proverbs 14:12 says, “There is a way that seems right to man, but in the end it leads to death.” Who or what we pursue really matters. Our pursuits in life determine our destiny. Wouldn’t it be sad to get to the end of our life and realize we never fulfilled the purpose we were created for?

I believe we discover our purpose in the Bible. God has given us a handbook for life. In the most famous sermon that Jesus ever gave, the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus taught us that “blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness for they will be filled.” We were created to glorify God, to reflect God’s character, to honor God, to represent God well in our social circles, and to follow God with unwavering devotion.

This isn’t a passive pursuit — it is a thrilling adventure that lasts a lifetime. Too many Christians invite God into their car, but grab the steering wheel as they tell God he’s welcome in the backseat. Oh, if a message or a moment really speaks to us we may invite God to join us in the front seat but let’s not get radical, we are still in control. Sadly, when we bypass God’s invitation to surrender completely to him we miss out on the deeper work he longs to do in our life and overlook the dreams and plans he has for us. And we miss out on our opportunity to fulfill our purpose in life.

The crazy thing is that, as we pursue God, we may end up out on a ledge. Outrageous obedience will always lead to extreme faith. People said I was crazy to walk away from a successful engineering career. A family member of mine views life through education, position and possessions. He told me not to pursue being a pastor. It is a low-respect, low-paying job. I had the potential to be the CEO of a successful engineering firm. In his mind, it made more sense for Humpty Dumpty to be on a dangerous wall than for me to change careers. But, I chose to pursue God and his spirit’s direction and leadership. What a crazy adventure it is! I pray you are living full-bore, all out, for Jesus Christ.

Humpty Dumpty has an awful fall and egg parts are scattered all over the ground. All of the king’s horses and all of the king’s men are at the sight of the accident, but when life is a mess we need the King, Jesus Christ. Only he can put the pieces of life back together again!
