Big Smoke to be held July 9

The Big Smoke will be held July 9 at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church in Minot.

The event is sponsored by the Serra Club of North Central North Dakota. The event supports vocations to the priesthood and religious life in the Bismarck Diocese

According to a press release, the activities will get under way at 5 p.m., starting with a Mass in the church officiated by Bishop David Kagan. The barbecue will follow on the church grounds at 6 p.m. The Big Smoke is a barbecue feed and meat smoking contest with 10 teams cooking in competition with each other. Each team includes a priest, a deacon, a monk, or other religious feature.

A silent auction is one of the main events. Other features include a bounce house and games, a meal that includes three kinds of smoked meat, coleslaw and potato salad, baked beans, dessert and beverages, including Father Justin Waltz’s home brew

Tickets are $35 per single adult and $80 for families and their children under age 18.

Serra Club members are selling tickets at several Minot churches after Sunday Masses. They are also available at parish offices. People may also contact club present Mike Ruelle at 839-4365, or club member Corey Bohlig at 839-0247.
