Priests celebrating anniversaries of ordination
BISMARCK – A special Mass to honor clergy who are celebrating their anniversary of ordination to the priesthood will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 20, in the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, Bismarck.
Diocese of Bismarck clergy celebrating their ordinations are: Bishop David Kagan (40), Msgr. Gerald Walsh (60), and the Revs. Stephen Kranz, OSB (60), John Pfeifer (50), George Pruys (40), John Guthrie (25), Johnson Kuriappilly (25), Boniface Muggli, OSB (25), John Paul Gardner (10), Paul Eberle (10), and Manuel Silva Cely, OSB (10).
Clergy who served in the northwestern part of North Dakota and parishes they served are:
Kagan was born and raised in Illinois and ordained a priest in 1975 at the Cathedral of St. Peter in Rockford, Ill. He served in many roles at different parishes and schools within the Diocese of Rockford. He was installed as the seventh bishop of the Diocese of Bismarck Nov. 30, 2011.
Walsh was born and raised in Minot as a member of St. Leo’s Parish. He completed his priestly formation years at St. Thomas Seminary in Denver and then served in various capacities with the diocese. He retired in 1998.
Kranz, a native of Hastings, Minn., served as pastor at St. Anthony’s in Mandaree, St. Joseph’s at Twin Buttes, Sacred Heart in White Shield from 1971-1998 and at St. Anthony’s in New Town from 2001-10. He retired in 2012.
Pfeifer was born and raised in Milwaukee, Wis. He served at St. Bridget’s in Parshall, Sacred Heart in Plaza, St. Leo’s in Minot and St. Joseph’s, Williston, St. Luke’s in Noonan, St. Michael’s in Columbus, St. Mary’s in Lignite and Epiphany in Watford City, Our Lady of Consolation in Alexander and St. Peter Canisius in Grassy Butte (which closed in 2007). He retired in 2012.
Pruys currently serves at St. Michael’s Ukrainian Church in Minot and Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Church in Wilton.
Guthrie was born and raised in Bismarck as a member of the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit. He was assigned pastor of St. Joseph’s in Williston and St. John the Baptist in Trenton from 1999-2008.
Kuriappilly was born and raised in India. He was the administrator at St. Thomas the Apostle in Tioga, St. Michael’s in Ray and St. James in Powers Lake from 2000-05. He then served as pastor at St. Joseph’s in Beulah and St. Martin’s in Hazen from 2005-12.
Gardner was raised in the New England area. He served as pastor of St. Joseph’s in Williston and St. John the Baptist in Trenton from 2005-08 and again in 2010. In between this time period, he served at St. Mary’s in Foxholm, St. Philomena’s in Glenburn and St. Leo (in residence) in Minot from 2008-09.
Eberle grew up near Hague. He served as pastor at St. Anthony’s in Mandaree and St. Joseph’s at Twin Buttes from 2012-14.
