What’s trendy for brides in 2016

What is trendy in wedding wear for brides, bridesmaids and flower girls this year?

To find out, we asked the owners of Minot’s two bridal wear stores.

Debbie Harris, owner of Fiancee in downtown Minot, who has been in the business for 31 years, said, “As far as bridal is concerned, it’s the vintage look.” She said it’s lace with nude-colored underlay or champagnes and taupes underneath the laces.” The underlay is “almost like a flesh tone,” she said.

“That’s what is trending right now,” Harris said.

Mary Keller, owner of Mary Me Bridal & Formal Wear, whose store is at 1525-31st Avenue SW, Suite D, said, “For the bride, the illusion neckline and backs,” is new in dresses for the bride.”

“Dresses with straps are back,” she added.

“They love the lace right now,” Keller said, also noting the “vintage-inspired look” with champagne-colored underlay. “Wedding dresses have like this champagne underlay versus just ivory getting popular,” she said.

“We’re selling a lot of lace right now,” Keller said. Showing one of those dresses, she said the “underlace is just a little bit darker and it makes the lace just pop more.”

“Strapless gowns will always have a place in bridals,” she added. Most of the bridal dresses have a train.

Keller has been celebrating her 10th year in the business as of Jan. 4.

“As far as bridesmaids are concerned, they’re doing hues of monochromatics and hues of like the taupes, the silvers, the rose gold metallics. That’s the big ones, and sequins, of course,” Harris said.

She said the strong colors going into wedding for this summer are eggplant (or plum) as well as navy, “which is so strange because I’ve been in business for 31 years and they’ve come around a couple times.”

She said a lace top with chiffon bottom also is trending for bridesmaids’ dresses. “We’re seeing the nude underneath the laces in this category as well,” Harris said.

For the bridesmaids, Keller said sequined bridesmaids’ dresses are a new item this year, referring to two mannequins with peach-colored long dresses covered with sequins.

“For the bridesmaids we talked about the sequins, there’s also a lot of lace, and the combination of lace and chiffon also is really popular,” Keller said.

Dresses for the flower girls stays on trend with the bridal gowns, Keller said. “But we’re seeing more lace in the flower girl dresses. They always like the full skirts obviously.”

Harris said dresses for flower girls follow the same as for the grownups. She said they have lace bodices and there’s a lot of tuille ball gowns on flower girls’ dresses.

Both stores sell shoes and all the accessories for weddings.
