Northwest Arts Center presents ‘Works on Paper’ exhibitions

Submitted Photo Art work is displayed at the Northwest Arts Center ‘Works on Paper’ exhibition.

The Northwest Arts Center opens the spring semester at Minot State University with a presentation on printmaking by Juror Susanna Crum, associate professor and head of printmaking at Indiana University Southeast, New Albany, Indiana. Also on display will be two exhibitions featuring a diverse range of works on paper.

It is the 51st year for the “INT’L Paperworks 2022” annual juried exhibition on display alongside the solo exhibition, “Two Friends,” by 2021 Paperworks Best of Show artist Erin Wohletz.

Crum will be presenting in the Art Seminar series to students and the public at MSU’s Aleshire Theater at noon today. Crum selected 46 pieces of artwork by artists from the United States, Australia, and France pieces and designated awards from a field of 282 submitted works for the annual juried exhibition. Many mediums are represented, ranging from three-dimensional paper sculpture, book arts, drawing, digital and alternative process photography to a myriad of printmaking processes.

INT’L Paperworks was retitled for 2022 to better reflect the multi-country appeal and participants. From the first call for entries in 1969, the competition has brought diverse artwork “on or of paper, traditional and experimental,” to the university campus and greater Minot community.

“INT’L Paperworks 2022” shares the Walter Piehl Gallery with Americas 2021: Paperworks Best of Show winner, artist and printmaker Erin Wohletz of Knoxville, Tennessee. Their latest work explores gender identity, queerness and authenticity of self. Wohletz’s exhibition entitled “Two Friends,” reads as visual essays about their self-journey to nonbinary queerness.

A closing reception and online viewing of “Two Friends” with Wohletz will be held on Thursday, Feb. 17, from 6:30-8 p.m. Both exhibition and reception are free and open to the public. Wohletz will be speaking to her work and the exhibit at 7 p.m. Masks are not required, but individuals who are not fully vaccinated or deemed vulnerable are encouraged to continue to wear masks.
