Chippewa Downs to remain closed

Coronavirus cancels horseracing

BELCOURT – There was some hope that horseracing would be held at Chippewa Downs this year but, like so many other events and happenings throughout the state during the coronavirus epidemic, the flash of silks and the glean of sunlight on spirited horses won’t be happening in 2020.

The normal race dates for Chippewa Down are in June of each year but those dates were an early scratch from the racing calendar. For a time it appeared horseracing would return for five weekends in August. However, that possibility has been canceled due to a variety of concerns surrounding possible spread of coronavirus.

Preliminary plans called for limiting attendance at the track and observing social distancing guidelines, masks included, in the hopes that racing programs could be held. However, in the interest of safety, the Turtle Mountain Chippewa made the decision to wait until 2021 to resume horseracing at Chippewa Downs.
