Meet the artist: Kami Hanson

Current Hometown: Minot

Where can we see your work?

62 Doors Gallery, as well as the Peddlers Market and online on the Skull Kandy website, Instagram, Facebook and Etsy.

In what media do you work?

Acrylic hand painting and decorating on European Mounts and Cow Skulls. Other mixed media is also used.

How would you describe your style?

I would describe my style as a variety of decor to match any home. I could do sports to Swarovski crystals.

Who would you say have been influences on your work?

I have attended lots of sport shows and have heard arguing between spouses on how their mounts don’t match the decor in the home or they are laying around collecting dust or outside getting weathered. That inspired me to help design and take the pieces that may be broken or small and make them into conversation pieces. Not all may be trophies but my goal is that they are just as equal in stories when I am finished and that they help preserve the story of conservation and the respect hunters have for wildlife.

My family are also impactful with hunting and ranching but I get a lot of creativity from my mom. I would also my background in art classes and 4H had a lot to do with it.

Are there particular themes you like to explore in your work?

Most especially, I would say a lot reflects the clients home decor but I also like to base it off of trends and paint colors.

What do you most enjoy about the creative process?

The thing I enjoy most is being able to get my visions out and design them into something tangible. I like coming up with ideas and carrying them out exactly or even better than I had planned.

Tell us a little about yourself.

I grew up on a farm out by Des Lacs. I graduated from DLB and was the Art Club president. In my free time I enjoy traveling, hunting and fishing as well as riding horse. I am a huge supporter and volunteer of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. I like finding eclectic items and pieces to inspire me. I often attend the dirt track races and Skull Kandy is even featured on a couple cars out on the track. I’m an animal lover with my two dogs and am also an active board member on the Souris Valley Animal Shelter.
