Meet the artist: Chloe Marie

Current Hometown: Minot

Tell us a little about yourself.

I am a 16-year old singer/songwriter with dreams of making a career as a professional recording artist. Born in Fargo, my family moved to Minot in 2012. I’m currently a sophomore at Minot Central Campus.

What kind of art/arts do you practice?

I focus primarily on singing and I play guitar and piano. I’ve taken voice lessons for five years, guitar for five years, and piano for around three years. The lessons as well as participation in school choirs and contests, Western Plains Youth Ensemble, and community groups have helped me improve my musical skills.

How did you get started?

You could say I got started on the stage at three months old playing baby Jesus for my sister’s school play. But, my vocal performing really started at age five in my bedroom singing to any Disney Channel show you could think of. Along with that, my best friend and I would share our homemade song and dance shows with our families. Also, starting at age 8, I began writing songs down in my Hannah Montana notebook. From there, my love for music only grew more immense every day.

Where might we have seen /heard/ experienced your work?

My first original song, “Adore,” was released on iTunes and other music sites on October 25, 2016. Produced by Adapt Audio in Minot, “Adore” is a slower, powerful ballad about getting away from a bad relationship or influence. My next song, “Now It’s Maybe,” was released in spring 2017, followed by “Don’t Have To Be” in September 2017, meaning I had released three singles before the age of 16. All of the songs touch on love, and the confusion and feelings that come with it. I have performed my original songs and others on the Talent Stage at the North Dakota State Fair, the YWCA Women of Distinction Banquet in Minot, the Women’s Business Summit in Bismarck, and other venues. In August, I auditioned for American Idol in Omaha, and I took third place in Minot’s Got Talent in February. Looking for more opportunities to perform is always on the top of my list while working to gain experience with the art I truly love.

What influenced your pursuit of this art?

My sister, Chelsea, was the primary music influence for me. She was in musicals at Shanley High School in Fargo, sang in a Christian rock band, and performed in The Sound of Music at the University of Mary in Bismarck. I’m 12 years younger than Chelsea and would attend all of her music events without complaint. I was also her biggest cheerleader, knowing every word and dance move by heart. Chelsea now occasionally sings at performances with me.

How would you describe your style?

My style isn’t set in stone, but every song I have written is put to a pop base with strategic beats, rhythms, and lyrics. My style would also be defined as contemporary, with a splash of folk. My lyrics offer a unique glimpse of real life events. My personal style is very much reflected in my music.

What do you feel has been your greatest artistic achievement?

I would say releasing my first music video was one of the biggest achievements, since it had been a childhood dream of mine. Watching my favorite artists on TV or YouTube singing their songs with visuals really appealed to me. The making of my “Now It’s Maybe” music video with Kyle Hipol Films was such a fun experience. I got together a few of my friends, and we had a blast. With the video being filmed on the last day of school, it truly started off my summer with a bang. It was released to YouTube a few weeks later, and features many areas of Minot. You can find it by searching Chloe Marie, “Now It’s Maybe.”

What do you most enjoy about the creative process?

When I create a new song, I feel like I can make a difference – an impact – because within my songs are stories that I hope people can relate to and that will make them feel stronger, better, or just add to the joy of their day.

What projects do you currently have underway or will you soon have underway?

I’m currently working on my first EP which will be released soon! It will have five original tracks that communicate stories, in a creative format, each one unique in its own way. I’m so excited for everyone to hear my new material! People from Minot, the state of North Dakota and, with the reach of iTunes, even around the world have been so supportive of my work. Releasing the EP is truly a huge accomplishment for me, and it’s hard to believe I’ll soon be one step closer to making my dream come true.
