Beavers tame Dragons in the bubble

Minot State's softball team picked up a pair of victories in a Tuesday doubleheader against Minnesota State Moorhead in the Air-Supported Dome. The Beavers won the first game, 5-1, before edging the Dragons 5-4 in the second game.
Game One:
Minot State 5,
MSU Moorhead 1
Haley Hernandez opened the scoring with an RBI single up the middle before Lauren Cowden launched an RBI triple to left center. Cowden scored Minot State's third run of the inning on a fielder's choice by Maggie Mercer as the Beavers led 3-0 after the second inning.
Zoya Robbins lifted an RBI double down the right field line in the third and Kiera Shwaluk touched home on Cowden's sacrifice fly in the fourth inning. The Dragons scored their lone run of the game on an RBI single in the fifth inning.
Karlee Coughlin led Minot State with three hits, followed by Robbins with two while Cowden had a team-high two RBI.
Pitcher Laura Mendez improved to 7-7 on the season with the complete-game victory.
Game Two:

MSU Moorhead 4
MSU Moorhead opened with two runs on three hits in the top of the first inning. The Beavers answered in the bottom half of the inning with Coughlin's RBI double down the right field line. Minot State tied the game when Mercer stole home in the third inning.
Randi Wright scored the go-ahead run on Mercer's sacrifice fly in the fourth inning. The Dragons touched home once in the fifth inning before the Beavers added a pair of runs in the sixth inning. MSU Moorhead scored its final run of the game in the top of the seventh inning.
Coughlin, Shwaluk and Cowden led the Beavers with two hits each while Coughlin led Minot State with two RBI.

The Beavers (16-9, 5-3 NSIC) move on to face St. Cloud State (22-10, 4-4 NSIC) in a doubleheader Saturday at noon in St. Cloud, Minn.
