MSU volleyball keeps rolling against Bemidji State

BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Minot State volleyball team won its third straight match on Saturday, defeating Bemidji State, 3-1, on the road.

Junior Shelby Spuller got the ball rolling for her team in the opening set. Bemidji State had no answer for the 5-foot-11 outside hitter as she recorded five kills, including the set winner, en route to a 25-20 victory.

The two teams struggled to gain separation in the second set as Minot State held a slim 22-21 advantage. That’s when Spuller took over once more, delivering three straight kills to give her team the 25-21 win.

After making a final stand in the third set with a 25-22 win, Bemidji couldn’t extend its comeback effort in the fourth set. Minot State left no doubt with a 25-16 set win to secure the match victory.

Spuller finished with a game-high 19 kills to go with five digs, while senior setter Kelsey Dewulf racked up 43 assists.

The Beavers (9-7, 3-4 NSIC) hope to keep its three-game winning streak alive on Friday when they return home for a 6 p.m. matchup against Winona State.

Minotauros cage

Ice Dogs, 6-1

BLAINE, Minn. – It took just six minutes for the Minot Minotauros to squash all hope for Fairbanks.

Minot found itself in a scoreless game with the Ice Dogs at the Schwan’s Super Rink on Saturday as just over six minutes remained in the opening period. The Minotauros saw a number of early chances, but they couldn’t get the puck past Fairbank’s goaltender Nate Reid.

That’s when Minot exploded for three goals in the last six minutes, propelling the Minotauros to a 6-1 victory.

The first strike came off the stick of Matthew Gellerman as the the 6-foot-1 forward finally found the back of the net with 5:29 left. Fritz Belisle delivered the second punch, scoring four minutes later off an assist from Taylor Lantz and Keenan Lund.

With the Ice Dogs reeling, Lincoln Erne delivered the knockout punch just 33 seconds later. The Blaine native went unassisted, scoring to give the Minotauros a commanding 3-0 lead entering the second period.

The Ice Dogs managed to score one goal in the second period before getting shut out for the remainder of the game by goaltender Nicholas Grabko, who recorded 34 saves in the win.

Gellerman finished with two goals on the day, while forward Kyle Oleksiuk posted a pair of assists.

Next up for the Minotauros is a pair of road games against the Brookings Blizzard on Sept. 28-29.

Majettes swim

east, take first at West Fargo Invite

WEST FARGO — The Minot High School girls swimming and diving traveled out of their comfort zone to face teams in the east.

“This was a new pool for a lot of the kids,” Majettes head coach Emily Jensen said. “The facility here is amazing and where the state meet will be held so it was good for us.”

Getting to experience where the state meet will be held was just one perk of the weekend, as Minot High defeated Fargo North and Dickinson in a double dual Friday and took first at the West Fargo Invitational Saturday.

“We had a good weekend,” Jensen said. “It was exciting for our kids to get a win at a bigger invite. It was a close meet the whole way through. Sheyenne really swam well today and they made us work hard for this.”

The West Fargo Invitational Top 5 team scores consisted of Minot High (407), West Fargo Sheyenne (364), West Fargo (229), Williston (218) and Fargo Davies (188).

Minot High showed their dominance in freestyle, taking first in both the 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays.

“Our 400 free relay was fun to watch. We haven’t hit a fastest time for awhile in those relays and we did finally today,” Jensen said.

The 400-yard freestyle relay — comprised of Rylie Webb, Emily Brugman, Payton Luzardo and Hannah Zaderaka — hit a season-best time of 3:48.14. The time could be further improved with crisper exchanges off the blocks according to Jensen.

Other first place finishes for the Majettes include Zaderaka in the 100-yard freestyle and Rylie Webb in the 100-yard breaststroke.

One swimmer that stood out to Jensen this weekend was freshman Payton Luzardo.

“Payton Luzardo is really coming into her own for us and it’s fun to see her confidence build as the season progresses,” Jensen said. “She’s gotten stronger and more aggressive with her racing and mental toughness. She is a coachable kid, does what we ask and has risen with the opportunities she’s been given.”

The Majettes will return home for a dual against Bismarck Century at 5 p.m. at Magic City Campus on Tuesday, Sept. 25.

MHS soccer

fends off Sabers

on the road, 2-1

BISMARCK – The Minot High School boys soccer team escaped Bismarck with a win on Saturday by defeating Legacy, 2-1.

Jordin Lennon set the tone early for the Magicians, sending a strike into the back of the net in the second minute of the game off an assist from junior forward Noah Schmidt. Schmidt set his team up for another goal in the 42nd minute, this time hitting Courage Amsbury in stride.

The senior forward collected the ball and launched it past Legacy’s goalkeeper for the score, giving the Magi a 2-0 lead at the half.

But the Sabers didn’t go down easy. Legacy’s TJ Seidel brought life to his team in the 75th minute, getting the Sabers on the board with a goal.

Minot goalkeeper Braden Cochran stood his ground, though, totaling 10 saves on the night and preventing the Sabers from scoring an equalizer in the final moments as the Magi secured the 2-1 victory.

The win pushes Minot above .500 (5-4, 4-3 WDA) on the season and gives the team momentum as it prepares for a revenge match against Century on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

Minot fell to the Patriots at home on Sept. 4, 5-0. Now the Magi will look to return the favor as they take on Century on the road.
