At each concert, Gaskell will talk about about the instrument and its history. At the children's program he wll introdce the kids to the West African kora harp and talk about his life in Gambia. He will perform on the harp at each concert.
Gaskell has learned the history and music of the kora harp from master kora players Malamini Jobarteh and Moriba Kuyateh from Gambia.
The West African kora is a 21 string harp that is native to the Mandinka people of Gambia, Senegal, Mali, Guinea and Guinea Bissau. It dates back 300 years, although some of the music comes from the middle 13th century around the founding of the Mandinka empire.
Light refreshments will be available.
