Thousands of trucks registered in ND each year

BISMARCK – The trucking industry continues to grow with more large tractor-trailers traveling and transporting across the nation. North Dakota is no exception.

More than 49,588 trucks were registered with the North Dakota Department of Transportation’s Motor Vehicle Division this past year.

The truck category for registrations includes the tractor-trailers, said Jamie Olson, a spokeswoman for the N.D. Transportation Department.

That category excludes farm trucks and pickups. In 2017, the most recent figures available, 39,438 farm trucks were registered and 273,582 pickups but the pickup category also has motorcycles, snowmobiles, trailers, off highway, etc.

Some of the higher numbers of registrations for trucks in the state were in 2004 and 2005 when 65,984 and 74,063, respectively, were registered. In the years 2013-2016, more than 50,000 trucks were registered in North Dakota each of those years.
