PICK CITY - The marina at Lake Sakakawea State Park is returning to normal. High winds and waves hit the marina during a June 10 storm, turning walkways to marina slips into twisted metal.
Although none of the large boats in the marina sustained severe damage, many had to vacate the marina as a precaution against further storms. Repair work included the use of a large crane mounted on a barge.
"Today we got the walkways back in. Five were broken apart," said Greg Corcoran, manager, on Friday. "We got those in place and the boats are coming back. They are happy."
The protection offered by the marina has been limited due to a very high water level in Lake Sakakawea. Friday's level was 1,853.0 feet, one foot below overflow. A protective rock reef that offers protection for the marina has been under the water for several weeks.
"It's way underneath," said Corcoran. "We just want to make sure we're doing everything we can."
Those efforts include re-opening the marina's on-the-water concession store. The facility is used extensively by boaters to refuel, purchase refreshing ice cream and other items. Corcoran said he expects the marina store to be fully operational sometime next week.
