The International Music Camp's 2018 Festival of the Arts concert series in the International Peace Garden kicks off June 8.
All events begin at 8 p.m. and are free and open to the public except where noted. All concerts will be held in the Burdick Center for the Performing Arts unless otherwise noted.
On June 8, the High 48s will perform. The concert is $10 or free to Old Time Fiddle Workshop participants and begins at 7 p.m.
Born and raised in the Upper Midwest, The High 48s consists of songwriters who perform their own material in addition to the "festival favorites." The band takes its name from railroad slang for the boxcars originally used to transport troops in World War I, which could carry 40 soldiers or eight horses, and later used in the United States on fast-moving "hot shot" freight trains by train hoppers during the Great Depression.
On June 22, the Brillante Chamber Players, which consists of select music faculty members from the University of North Dakota, will take the stage. The artists travel extensively and give performances, clinics, lectures and master classes nationally and internationally. This performance features three members of the faculty: Simona Barbu on cello, Nariaki Sugiura on piano and Scott Sandberg on saxophone.
On June 29, the International Brass Quintet will perform. IMC's in-residence quintet will perform a variety of repertoire from Baroque through jazz. The quintet members carry a busy teaching schedule at the camp, as well as presenting concerts in the region. The group is made up of Scott Guidry from Bemidji State University and Mark Nelson from South Dakota Symphony Orchestra on trumpet, Arlene Shiplett from Saskatoon Symphony on french horn, Joel Pugh from the University of North Dakota on trombone, and Jacob Grewe from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire on tuba.
On July 6, the Old Fashioned Band Concert and Ice Cream Social at the Masonic Auditorium will feature IMC staff and faculty band performing a broad range of works, including marches, classic works for band and popular melodies. Ice cream is sponsored by Pride Dairies of Bottineau.
On July 13, organists Marilyn Schempp and Peggy Bartunek will take the Burdick Center stage. Schempp is the principal organist of the South Dakota Symphony and Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She holds a bachelor's degree in vocal and instrumental music from Augustana University in Sioux Falls and a master's of music in organ performance from the University of South Dakota. Her colleague, Bartunek, an active pianist, vocalist and choral adjudicator, is a member of the Wild Sneaky Oats and serves as the Rodgers Organ representative for Minnesota and the Dakotas.
On July 20, IMC Faculty Big Band will perform at the Masonic Auditorium. This 20-piece big band is comprised of some of the finest artist-teachers and clinicians in North America. The band will provide easy listening from the big band era through modern jazz.
On July 27 and 28, the Festival of Arts series draws to a close with back to back performances by Raine Hamilton. Performing on violin or guitar and backed by a double bassist and cellist, Hamilton's powerful vocals add to the string quartet arrangements. A Canadian bilingual artist, Hamilton is also a charming and funny storyteller, pairing her tunes with story introductions in English and French.
