Man sentenced for punching Ward County sheriff’s deputy

A 44-year-old Garrison man was sentenced to time served and three years of probation for punching a Ward County sheriff's deputy in the head last March.

Archie Drew Hopkins changed his plea to guilty to simple assault on a peace officer, a Class C felony, on Wednesday in district court in Minot.

Judge Richard Hagar sentenced him to a year in prison, with all time suspended except the 81 days he has already served, followed by three years of supervised probation. Hopkins must also pay $1,100 in court costs. He must also obtain a chemical dependency evaluation. If Hopkins successfully completes probation, the charge will be reduced to a Class A misdemeanor.

The state dismissed a misdemeanor simple assault charge against Hopkins.

A deputy had removed Hopkins' handcuffs to place him on a hospital bed at Trinity Hospital and Hopkins resisted and swung out with a closed fist that struck the deputy on the side of his head.
