Police: fight over thermostat leads to terrorizing charge for Minot man

2 min read

A 33-year-old Minot man is accused of assaulting his fiancee's brother and threatening the other man with a knife during a domestic altercation at a southeast Minot trailer park early Friday morning.

Cornelius Marcel Young is charged with terrorizing, a Class C felony in district court in Minot. He was scheduled to make an initial appearance on the charge on Friday.

Young pleaded guilty to Class B misdemeanor simple assault – domestic violence in Minot Municipal Court on Monday and was given a suspended jail sentence, with a requirement that he serve two consecutive days in jail, that he complete an anger management class and pay $275 in court costs.

According to a probable cause affidavit filed with the court, Young got into a fight with his fiancee's brother over the other man turning up the thermostat in the trailer. Young yelled at the other man, punched him in the face and knocked him into the north living room wall. The other man grabbed a children's toy and hit Young with it. Young's fiancee, who was holding her 2-year-old child, tried to break up the fight and eventually persuaded the two men to go to different rooms.

As he went to his bedroom, the fiancee's brother said he was going to call the police. A few moments later, Young went into the kitchen, grabbed a large knife, went to the bedroom where his fiancee's brother had gone and threatened the other man again. His fiancee said Young threatened to kill her brother as he walked into the bedroom with the knife and she believed he would kill the other man. The alleged victim told police that Young pushed him into a closet, where he landed on his back. Young then got on top of him and was swinging the knife in his direction. The other man pushed Young away and Young's fiancee jumped on Young's back and bit his ear to distract him. Young eventually got up and left and Letvin went outside the trailer. Two children were present in the trailer during the altercation but were not injured.

Young denied threatening his fiancee's brother with a knife when he spoke to police.

The fiancee's brother moved into the trailer with Young and his sister and their two children about two months ago.
