Lightning strike causes fire, release of oil and saltwater

1 min read

GRASSY BUTTE - A lightning strike caused a fire and a contained release of oil and saltwater at a saltwater disposal well near Grassy Butte on Monday.

The North Dakota Oil and Gas Division was notified Tuesday of the contained release occurring at the Cypress Grassy Butte saltwater disposal well about nine miles north of Grassy Butte Monday night.

Cypress Energy Partners reported about 3,192 gallons of oil and 135,576 gallons of saltwater were contained to the location after lightning struck the site. Eighteen tanks were consumed in a fire as a result of the lightning strike. Proper site maintenance also prevented the fire from leaving the location.

A state inspector has been to the location and will monitor the continued clean up.
