NEW TOWN - The grand opening will be Tuesday, May 9, at 11 a.m. for the $17.2 million Three Affiliated Tribes' law enforcement center and tribal court building in New Town.

Officially named the MHA (Mandan, Hidatsa, Arikara) Nation Public Safety and Judicial Center, the 29,600-square-foot building at 609 Main Street will be occupied by law enforcement and the tribal court, which have been located in other buildings.

"It's a long time coming and long overdue," said Mark Fox, chairman of the Three Affiliated Tribes, of the new facility. He said law enforcement and judicial services have been in need of a new facility for the past 60 years.

Fox said the tribal business council was very supportive of the project, also noting its financing was 100 percent paid by the Three Affiliated Tribes through royalties and tax revenues.

He said the new facility will make a strong impact and is a significant step in protecting the communities and people.

Randy Lindemann, originally from Minot and who is with Nelson-Tremain Partnership architectural firm in Minneapolis, designed the building.

The new building is phase two of the tribes' Gerald "Tex" Fox Justice Center Complex on the east side of New Town. The justice center - the jail - is located across the street from the new building.

The law enforcement center includes 33 offices, E-911 communications center with six dispatch stations, a combat training room for physical combat training and holding cells to temporarily hold people without putting them in jail.

In the courthouse portion are 35 offices and three courtrooms.

Three thousand square feet of public spaces includes lobby and waiting rooms.

The building features a ceremonial rotunda. Traditional artwork will also be featured at the building.

The 2.3-acre site has parking for 25 visitors' vehicles and 43 staff vehicles.

Heating and cooling for the state-of-the-art building is provided by 60 geothermal wells.

Capital City Construction of Bismarck is the contractor for the new building.

A meal and refreshments will be served following the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The event is open to the public; however, parking is limited. Those wishing to attend are asked to park at the Elbowoods Memorial Health Center parking lot located at 1058 College Drive, New Town, where shuttle buses will be provided for transportation to the facility.
