Mountain lion shot and killed near Bismarck’s downtown area
BISMARCK (AP) — Officials with the North Dakota Game and Fish Department killed a mountain lion within Bismarck’s city limits.
Police received a call shortly after 5 a.m. Tuesday from someone who reported seeing a lion near Bismarck Municipal Ballpark. The ballpark is near the city’s downtown and there are homes nearby.
Officers responded to the area to confirm the sighting. Authorities followed the lion’s tracks through a city park, through the ballpark and into another city park.
Once the animal was located, a Game and Fish officer shot and killed it to ensure public safety.
Mountain lion sightings are rare in North Dakota’s big cities. But state Wildlife Chief Jeb Williams says the Missouri River that flows near downtown Bismarck is a natural traveling corridor for young lions in search of new territory.
