Western Plains presents ‘The Pirates of Penzance’

Western Plains Opera's season opening production of Gilbert and Sullivan's "The Pirates of Penzance" will take place Friday, Sept. 11, and Saturday, Sept. 12, at 7 p.m. in Ann Nicole Nelson Hall at Minot State University. The production is directed by Ted Christopher, produced by DeVera Bowles and conducted by Efraín Amaya.
This comic operetta sung entirely in English is packed with swashbuckling adventure, clever wordplay and unforgettable melodies. Follow the young pirate apprentice, Frederic, as he tries to escape his unlikely fate, only to find himself caught between a band of tenderhearted pirates, a troop of bumbling policemen and true love. Bursting with wit, romance and timeless favorites such as “I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major-General,” this family-friendly classic is an evening of laughter and musical delight for audiences of all ages.
Dr. Ted Christopher, associate professor of Voice at Penn State, is the guest stage director and portrays the role of Major-General Stanley. Christopher is a Gilbert and Sullivan expert with a deep connection to the Ohio Light Opera.
While guided by a guest director, the entire cast of "The Pirates of Penzance" is entirely local talent, including area music educators, MSU students and community members.
The production's principal roles feature local actors John Simonson as The Pirate King, Royce Brown as Frederic, Megan Klebe as Mabel, Kaylee Capp as Ruth, Kylee Cook as Samuel, Eric Furuseth as a police sergeant, Emily Broadwater as Edith, Devyn Bechel as Kate and Melissa Kainz as Isabel, along with local talent making up the ensemble.
