An award-winning North Dakota fiber artist and quilter is displaying her work at the Taube Museum of Art through Oct. 8.
Debbie Kauffman of Minot transforms thread, fabric, paint, beads and found materials into amazing works of textile art. Using a longarm quilting machine as her drawing tool, she creates detailed pieces that tell stories, explore social and environmental issues and celebrate the beauty of the world around us.
Kauffman’s work has been exhibited nationally and featured in quilting publications. Her recent work highlights sustainability by incorporating repurposed and everyday materials into pieces that spark conversation and invite viewers to look a little closer.
Kauffman named her exhibit “detritus,” defined as waste material or trash, especially left after a particular event. It is the result of a commitment to work with items that typically would be destined for the landfill. It germinated from a desire to engage with community and encourage others to share their perspective, according to Kauffman, who called it a study in letting go of expectations and embracing the possible, as a way to voice concerns and invite discussion.
A closing reception will be held Oct. 8 from 5-7 p.m. at the Taube, 2 Main St. N.
