Suspect charged with child abuse
A Minot man charged with felony child abuse made his initial appearance in North Central District Court on Thursday, Feb. 12.
Westin Connor Mattison, 30, appeared before district court Judge Gary Lee on one count of child abuse-victim under six, a Class B felony.
According to court documents, the charge against Mattison stemmed from a report made on Feb. 11 to the Minot police department of video footage which allegedly showed Mattison abuse a child. The reporting party said Mattison had stopped by at their residence the morning of Feb. 10, and heard a loud bang after Mattison was taking the child back to bed.
According to the affidavit of probable cause, the reporting party provided video recorded from the child’s bedroom, capturing Mattison throwing the child into a wall, and audibly cursing at and threatening the child to go back to sleep. A portion of the video recorded the sounds of choking, which the victim later confirmed to the reporting party the next morning.
Law enforcement reviewed the recorded footage of the alleged incidents, and photographs of scratches and bruises on the victim, which corroborated the reporting party’s and victim’s allegations.
Mattison has posted bond, and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing and arraignment on Thursday March 5.
