MDN hires new sports editor

Nathan Beitler
Never did I imagine that I would start my career in Minot, North Dakota.
My name is Nathan Beitler. I graduated from Brigham Young University in December of 2024 with a bachelor’s degree in Communications with an emphasis in Journalism & Sports Media and I am the Minot Daily News’ new Sports Editor.
I have loved watching and playing sports for as long as I can remember. I grew up in a town north of Houston, Texas and idolized the likes of Craig Biggio of the Houston Astros and Yao Ming of the Houston Rockets.
Some of my fondest memories I have growing up were visiting Minute Maid Stadium with my father, where he helped foster my love of sports from an early age.
I played Little League baseball up to junior high when I began playing football. I was right tackle on the offensive line until the end of the season when I was injured during practice and fractured two vertebrae in my lower back. My doctor informed me that I would not be able to play football again, lest I risk being paralyzed from the waist down.
Although I couldn’t play anymore, I was determined to stay close to the world of sports. I played tuba in my high school’s marching band so that I could still attend the football games. Hearing the crowd and watching the game under those Friday night lights was electric. It is a feeling I will never forget.
When I went up to BYU for college, I was unsure of what I wanted to do with my life. I was initially a finance major like my father, but after a few semesters, I knew that world wasn’t right for me. I felt totally lost. It wasn’t until I took a random Intro to Communications class that it all clicked. I wanted to be a news writer, and nothing was going to stand in my way.
After I graduated with my degree last December, I knew I wanted to go somewhere I had never been before. I also knew that I wanted to work in a town that cared as much about sports as I did. I looked at jobs all over the country for a new place to call home.
It took me a long time, but I am so thankful that I was able to find the city of Minot. I am so excited for my future here and to become a part of this amazing community.
“As the publisher of The Minot Daily News, I am absolutely thrilled to welcome Nathan Beitler to our team as our new Sports Editor,” said Robert Patchen, The Minot Daily News Publisher. “Nathan’s passion for sports, and professionalism, makes him a fantastic addition to our newsroom. We’re all eager to see the energy and expertise he brings to our sports coverage, and I have no doubt he’ll be a valuable asset to our readers and the Minot community.”
I look forward to getting to know you all and helping to tell the stories of your amazing athletes. If you would like to reach me, ask me any questions, or have a story idea you think Minot needs to hear, you can send me an email at nbeitler@minotdailynews.com.
