The fifth-ranked Purple Eagles from Niagara University (5-4-1) made the trip to the Maysa to take on the local players from Minot State University (MSU) in a competitive men's hockey match. MSU began the contest at 9-1-1 for the young season. With the game competitive, the Beavers needed all the time of regulation and an extra four minutes of play to eke out the win 2-1.

The Beavers used effort to start the game and posted an early goal to take the 1-0 lead at 2:33 gone in period one. Matthew Yakubowski (78) scored the goal from assists offered by Matthew Ronn (27) and Brett Tataryn (14) in the contest.

The rest of the first period was a clean game with only one penalty and very few mishaps along the way. MSU posted nine shots on goal compared to eight for the Purple Eagles.

The second period was a very tense period with four penalties- two for each side. The Beavers ended up early on with too many men on the ice that allowed the Purple Eagles to score at 7:24 gone in the second period to tie the game at 1-1 on the power play.

Both teams had 10 shots on goal with the penalties as well. The second period ended with the game knotted at 1-1, going into the third period of play.

The final period of play was a repeat of the first. The period saw no penalties, the puck stayed in play with very few shots on goal, with MSU posting four shots on goal compared to Niagara’s five. Each team had 23 shots on goal for the game. Regulation ended with the 1-1 tie.

The initial five minutes of overtime play mirrored the final period of regulation with no goals scored on minimal shots taken. With 1:22 to play, Joey Moffett (16) fed Yakubowski (78) for the second goal of the game for the Beavers, and the 2-1 win for MSU.

The narrow advantage for MSU ended up being shots on goal down the wire with 4 for the Beavers compared to only two for the Purple Eagles in the overtime period.

MSU improved to 10-1-1 record in the evening as both teams prepared for a second evening of action today at 7:30 p.m.
