The Velva-Drake-Anamoose-Garrison Aggies’ dreams of a perfect season came to an end on Friday night, October 9, as they fell to the Bishop Ryan-Our Redeemer’s Lions on the road.

The two teams faced off on Friday night for their Battle of the Penny, where the game winners gets to walk home with a wooden penny trophy. The trophy was made and donated by the Aggie Foundation in 2012 and features the logos of both teams. Since that year, the teams have fought over the privilege to display the ‘Penny’ in their respective schools.

Though the Aggies struck first with a long passing touchdown to senior wide receiver Brady Hauff, the Lions worked their way to a 21-14 lead with a quarterback sneak by junior Jake Altringer just before the first half ended.

Heading into the second half of the game, the Aggies were unable to catch up. The Lions scored their fourth touchdown of the night late into the fourth quarter to give them a 28-14 lead.

The Aggies scored another touchdown of their own in the fourth, but a fifth Lions touchdown with just one minute remaining put them just out of reach.

The game ended with an interception by the Lions’ senior cornerback Peyton Seay, returning the ‘Penny’ to the Lions for the first time in four years and giving the Aggies their very first loss of the season.

Both teams have just one game left in the regular season before the post season begins.

The Aggies will close out their regular season with a home game against South Prairie-Max at Garrison High School on Thursday, October 15.

The Lions will head on the road to face Tioga High School for their regular season end on Friday, October 16.

Starting at /week.
