Sentinels dominate Fargo South for first conference win

The Minot North Sentinels football team played host once again on Friday night, September 4, for their first conference game of the season against the Fargo South Bruins.
Coming into Friday night’s game already 1-0 on the season, the Sentinels were looking to continue their hopeful run to the state championship.
The Sentinels struck first on Friday night, with senior running back Cooper Chick breaking away from the Bruins’ defense to make a long rushing touchdown. With eight and a half minutes left on the clock in the first quarter of play, a completed extra point put the Sentinels up to an early lead at 7-0.
The Sentinels’ offensive dominance on the field was a constant component of the first half of the ball game, as they scored three more touchdowns before halftime.
The Sentinels’ second touchdown of the night came just six seconds into the second quarter, with junior running back Cian Hannon running the ball in for a touchdown. The extra kick gave the Sentinels a 14-0 lead to kick off the second quarter.
Their third touchdown came just three minutes before the end of the first half.
Junior quarterback Zander Kleen completed a pass to an open senior wide receiver, Gavin Tobey.
The Sentinels scored one last time in the first half with a pick six by senior defensive back Cameron Jesz. Jesz intercepted a pass from the Bruins’ quarterback, running it all the way to the end zone to close out the first half. It was his second interception of the night at that point.
The Sentinels were up 28-0 at the end of the first half.
The Bruins were finally able to put themselves on the board on Friday night early in the third quarter, but the blocked extra point left them at just six points.
Though the Sentinels defense was steadfast in holding the Bruins at six points, the Minot North offense continued to dominate.
The Sentinels scored their fifth touchdown of the night in the fourth quarter, and their sixth and final touchdown of the game in the fourth quarter.
With just one missed extra point by the Sentinels all game, they finished out the night with a decisive win over the Bruins at 41-6.
With their win on Friday night the Sentinels improved on their record for the season to 2-0, maintaining their undefeated status.
The Sentinels will head on the road for their next game and the team’s first away game of the season as they take on Grand Forks Red River next week, on Friday night, September 11.
