Beavers drop home game versus Wildcats

The Minot State Beavers football team is still on the hunt for their first win of the season after dropping their high scoring game against the Wayne State College Wildcats at home 35-28 on Thursday night, September 3.
Thursday night’s game was another strong offensive one for the Beavers. They were quick to get the game started and were the first on the scoreboard.
Minot State fifth-year student Brandon Hines Jr. got the ball rolling as he took the ball for a 62 yard touchdown with just over two minutes left in the first quarter. A completed extra point put the Beavers up to an early 7-0 lead.
The Wildcards struck back in the second quarter of play, earning one rushing touchdown and one passing touchdown for 14 unanswered points.
The Beavers sneaked an extra three points onto the score board two seconds before the end of the first half with a completed field goal by freshman kicker Jael Chavez, putting them just four points behind the Wildcats.
Down 10-14, the Beavers were first to receive in the second half.
The Beavers’ very first drive of the half ended with another rushing touchdown for Hines. The seven minute trudge down the field along with the completed extra point gave the Beavers their lead back 16-14 heading into the fourth quarter.
Once again, the Beavers found themselves kicking a field goal, this time much earlier in the quarter, widening their lead to 20-14.
The Wildcats were quick to respond and swiftly found momentum in the fourth quarter.
The Wildcats scored two touchdowns unanswered to put themselves back in the lead at 28-10.
With just under two minutes to go in the game, the Beavers scored another touchdown of their own, this time from fifth-year b-back Sam Buckhanan. The Beavers secured the two point conversion and tied the game 28-28 going into Wayne State’s last possession of the game.
The Wildcats took their possession and quickly worked up to a touchdown with less than 45 seconds left on the clock. They secured their extra point and led the Beavers at 35-28 at kickoff.
The Beavers tried to quickly work their way down the field, but on their third down, the Wildcats intercepted a pass, ending their hopes of seeing their first win of the season on Thursday night.
Though they fell on Thursday, the Beavers still have plenty of chances to turn the season around.
Their next chance at redemption will come on Saturday, September 12, as they travel to Sioux Falls, SD for an away game against Augustana University.
The Beavers will next be back in town for their homecoming game on Saturday, September 19, when they take on Southwest Minnesota State University.
