Legion Baseball: Vistas sweep trio of non-conference contests

Minot’s Logan Dixon went 4-for-6 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored in a sweep of Park River on Wednesday, July 1. The Vistas finished out the three-game non-conference road trip with a shutout victory against East Grand Forks (Minn.) on Thursday, July 2. Mike Kraft/MDN

The Minot Vistas traveled East across the state before ending their three-game trip in Minnesota looking to get the bad taste out of their mouth following a pair of mercy-rule losses at home to Fargo Post 2 their last time on the diamond.

Minot’s offense came to life in the seventh inning of both games against Park River, helping the Vistas fend off the Pirates in a doubleheader sweep on Wednesday, July 1. Peyton House broke a tie with a two-out, two-run double in the top of the seventh in the opener in a 3-1 victory and Minot completed the sweep with a final-inning relay in the nightcap, posting six runs to come away with a 7-4 win.

The Vistas traveled across state lines the following day and got a pitching gem from Remington Anderson, completing the road trip unblemished with a 7-0 victory over East Grand Forks (Minn.) on Thursday, July 2.

In the opener against Park River, Minot and the Pirates entered the seventh inning tied 1-1. Brody Mueller put Minot in front in the third with a two-out RBI single through the right side, scoring Logan Dixon, who led off the frame with a single.

The Pirates (12-5) recorded just three hits in the game, but a single off the bat of Jake Solseng in the fifth tied the game.

Park River recorded the first two outs against the Vistas right away in the seventh, but surrendered back-to-back singles to Dixon and Anderson before House broke the tie with his two-run double on a fly ball to left.

Mueller pitched a 1-2-3 seventh to put an exclamation mark on a complete-game three hitter. He struck out eight and walked four, tossing 103 pitches.

Dixon went 3-for-3 with a double and two runs scored.

The Vistas (18-12) needed a furious rally in the finale to come away with the victory. Minot led 1-0 heading into the fifth, but the Pirates plated two in the fifth and two more in the sixth to grab a 4-1 advantage entering the final frame.

Minot was limited to three hits through the first six innings before breaking out for seven in the final inning. The Vistas loaded the bases with no outs after three consecutive singles from Landyn McGhee, Anderson and House. Mueller sent a fly ball to center far enough to allow McGhee to tag and score from third.

Gavin King popped out to first, giving the Vistas just one out to work with. Dixon took a 3-1 pitch to the body to reload the bases and Tegan Schindler delivered a game-tying two-run single when down to his final strike.

Kayden Danielson brought in two more with a single up the middle to score Schindler and Dixon. McGhee added Minot’s seventh run with a single to short.

Anderson, House, Danielson and McGhee all finished with two hits.

Minot posted its third shutout of the season and second consecutive against a team from Minnesota. The Vistas blanked Dassel Cokato (Minn.), 13-0, in a consolation game at “The Pete” Invitational in Fargo last weekend.

Anderson got the start and went 5 1/3 innings, scattering three hits while striking out three and walking one. He allowed just one baserunner to reach past first base. Nick Thomas entered in the sixth inning and didn’t allow a hit.

The Vistas provided plenty of run support for their pitching staff, scoring three runs in the third, three more in the sixth and one in the seventh on eight hits. Mueller scored the first run of the game on a passed ball in the third and Schindler drove in Gannon Hedberg and King with a triple to center.

Mueller and Hedberg both plated runs via doubles in the sixth, and Anderson collected an RBI single in the seventh. Hedberg went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and a run scored. Mueller also registered two hits.

The Vistas return to conference play when they travel to play the Bismarck Governors for a doubleheader on Wednesday, July 8.

Starting at $3.75/week.
