Honeybees skid grows to 7 in loss to Spitfires

The Minot Honeybees returned to Corbett Field on Tuesday, July 7, after a brief break of play.
The Honeybees entered their game Tuesday night off of a six game skid, last ending on Saturday, July 4, after being swept in a four game series by league leader Madison Night Mares.
The Honeybees’ most recent win was Wednesday, June 24, in an away game against the Grand Forks Spitfires.
On Tuesday, the two teams met again, this time at Corbett Field, and the Spitfires were out for revenge.
Grand Forks came out in the top of the first inning hot out of the batter’s box.
The Spitfires eanred one double and drew three walks with their first three batters of the night. Their fourth in the line up, Mattison Kwarta, drew a grand slam home run on her third pitch seen, sending everyone home for a quick 4-0 lead.
The Honeybees offense had trouble getting on base in their first showing of the night, taking just a single walk before the Spitfires secured three outs for the half.
The Spitfires kept up their offensive and defensive pressure through the second and third innings. The Spitfires scored four more runs in the top of the second inning, and scored an additional four in the top of the third, including a three run home run. All the while, the Spitfires defense kept the Honeybees from sending more than five batters to the plate in the bottom of the second and third innings and prevented them from scoring a single run.
The Spitfires had their first scoreless innings in the top of the fourth and fifth, but the Honeybees were only able to put their first runs on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Alyssa DeMaio was the first Honeybees to cross home plate on Tuesday night, finding her way home after a fielder’s choice caught Alex Serbio making a run for second base.
Clare Rettler scored next for the Honeybees on an error at second base and Sara Simon rounded out the inning, scoring home with an RBI single to center field by Olivia Hernandez.
The sixth inning was scoreless for both teams, but the Honeybees went for a late come back in the bottom of the seventh inning, scoring three additional runs before at putout at short stop closed out the game.
The Spitfires defeated the Honeybees after seven innings with a final score of 12-6.
The Honeybees are still on the look out for the win that will break their now seven game skid. The Honeybees and the Grand Forks Spitfires will play the thrice more at home this week, with the teams competing in a double header on Wednesday, July 8 and finishing out their series on Thursday, July 9.
