Arnold to represent Hot Tots in Home Run Challenge

Minot’s Tyler Arnold will be swinging for the fences as one of 18 participants at this year’s Northwoods League Home Run Challenge on Tuesday, July 7, at the Field of Dreams Movie Site in Dyersville, Iowa, as part of the All-Star festivities.

Arnold and the other eight Great Plains representatives will go head-to-head against the nine sluggers from the Great Lakes division to determine both a team champion and an individual champion.

The Minot infielder leads the team with eight home runs, accounting for more than one-third of the team’s output in that category. His first home run of the season came in his fourth game in the Northwoods League against Willmar on May 28. Arnold ended the month of June with five home runs in six games, including a two-homer night against Mankato on June 30.

His eight home runs places him tied for fourth in the league. Rochester’s Cameron Sewell leads the league with 13 home runs and will also be among those competing in the Home Run Challenge.

This season, Arnold has 26 total hits with 25 RBIs and 19 runs scored with a .442 slugging average.

In two seasons at Hawai’i Pacific University, Arnold hit 30 home runs. He led the team in home runs his sophomore season with 14, nearly half of the team’s 31 total. He also led the team with a .735 slugging percentage. As a freshman, he finished second on the team in home runs with 16.

Among the teams representing the Great Plains division in the competition are Minot, Rochester, Duluth, La Crosse, Waterloo, Willmar, Eau Claire and Minnesota. The Great Lakes division is represented by Royal Oak, Battle Creek, Wausau, Wisconsin, Green Bay, Richmond, Kalamazoo and Kenosha.

The Home Run Challenge consists of nine innings with each player having one half inning to hit as many home runs as they can in two minutes. The Great Lakes players will bat in the top half and the Great Plains players will bat in the bottom half. Each player is allowed one 30-second timeout they can use at any point during their two minutes at the plate. An additional 30 seconds is granted to a batter’s time at the plate any time they hit back-to-back home runs. Timeouts cannot be utilized during bonus time. The team with the most home runs at the end of the competition will be deemed the team champion and the individual who hits the most home runs during their at-bat will be crowned the individual champion.

The Home Run Challenge begins at 7:05 p.m.

Starting at $3.75/week.
