Nodak Speedway set to hand out hardware on Championship Night

Seven weeks of racing – with a couple of rain outs sprinkled in – have all led up to one final night of racing as part of Nodak Speedway’s regular season in which five drivers will be crowned champions across five classes of feature car models at the Playground of Power.

Nodak Speedway is set to host its championship night on Sunday, June 21, beginning at 7 p.m., featuring the IMCA Modified, IMCA Hobby Stock, IMCA Northern Sportmod, IMCA Sport Compact and IMCA Stock Car models. All five titles are still very much up for grabs, with three classes featuring less than a 10-point gap between the top two drivers.

Several Minot natives are in contention heading into the final night of the regular season. Three drivers from the Magic City are the points leaders in their respective classes and four others are within the top four.

Minot’s Brock Beeter enters Sunday with the largest lead among the five drivers, holding a 15-point advantage over Connor Hanson in the IMCA Stock Car model. Beeter has amassed 186 points, while the native of Torquay, Sask., sits at 171. One point behind him is Brennor Grinstead of Stanley.

Beeter picked up his lone win on Mother’s Day and has cracked the top three in four other races. Hanson’s top finish of the season was a fourth-place finish to open the year on May 3. All six IMCA Stock Car races have produced six different victors to date.

Another Minot native topping the points standings is Chad Strachen in the IMCA Northern Sportmod division. At 190 points, he holds a three-point advantage over Keenan Glasser of Estevan, Sask. The title will more than likely come down to those two drivers, as Darren Schatz sits in third, 25 points back with 165.

After a six-place finish to open the season, Strachen hasn’t finished outside the top three the rest of the season, including a trip to victory lane on Mother’s Day. Glasser leads the field with four victories in six races.

No one dominated Nodak Speedway quite like Minot’s Caden Appelt in the IMCA Hobby Stock division. Appelt was a perfect 6-for-6 at taking the checkered flag and holds a 14-point lead over fellow Minot native Alan Bertsch with 200 points. Cash Saxon is a point behind Bertsch with 185 points.

Bertsch has a pair of runner-up finishes to Appelt and Saxon has done the same on three occasions. Appelt and Saxon finished 1-2 the first two races of the season. Bertsch is coming off a second-place finish last week.

Beeter, Strachen and Appelt top their respective points leaderboards at their hometown track. There are three other Minot drivers in contention in the IMCA Sport Compact division, all chasing Harrison Schwartz. Nicholia Topolski (150 points), Zach Hughbanks (148) and Landen Mikkelson (145) occupy second, third and fourth, respectively, behind the Foxholm native, who holds a two-point lead with 152.

The IMCA Sport Compact models have raced just four times this season at Nodak Speedway, with Hughbanks winning the first and most recent races. Harrison Schwartz made it to victory lane on May 24. Schwartz also has a pair of third-place finishes. Mikkelson finished runner-up behind Schwartz for his top placing of the year.

Steven Pfeifer not only leads the field in the IMCA Modified division, but has also totaled the most points of any driver across all classes this season with 220 points. The Bowbells native carries a nine-point lead over Turtle Lake’s Marcus Tomlinson and a 12-point lead over Westhope’s Gabriel Deschamp.

Pfeifer doesn’t have a victory at Nodak Speedway in six races, but has been a model of consistency with five top-four finishes. Tomlinson took the checkered flag on June 7 and also had a second-place finish on May 3. Deschamp started the season strong, placing third on May 3 and second on May 10. Travis Hagen won three races, but is 77 points back in 10th.

While Sunday marks the end of the regular season, there are still plenty of races at Nodak Speedway for fans to look forward to over the next two months as part of the track’s postseason schedule. That includes two visits from the World of Outlaws, with the first coming on June 28 and the second on August 30. The August race was originally scheduled for May 31, but was rained out.

Other highlights include a race night on Fourth of July featuring postrace fireworks, immediately followed the next day by the Dakota Classic Modified Tour on July 5. The season concludes with three consecutive nights of racing at Nodak Speedway with Motor Magic from Sept. 4-6.

Starting at $3.75/week.
