It was supposed to be a night to celebrate the first home game of the season for the Minot Honeybees, but it was the Madison Night Mares pitcher that ended up stealing the spotlight.

Andrea Jaskowiak took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and allowed a single hit. She tossed a complete game, striking out nine and walking one in Madison’s 13-0 victory over the Honeybees in six innings on Friday, June 12, at Corbett Field.

Friday’s contest was a rematch of last year’s championship series – a two-game sweep by the Night Mares to win their first Northwoods League title. The Night Mares (2-0) returned nine players from that championship team, and the Honeybees (1-2) had three players on last year’s runner-up roster.

Jaskowiak lost her no-hit bid on the first batter of the sixth inning when Alex Serbio recorded an infield single, beating out the throw to first from third base. Jaskowiak went on to retire the final three batters she faced.

Jaskowiak allowed just three base runners all game. Ellen Tarjen reached base safely with two outs in the second as a result of an error at short. She reached base again in the fifth on the only walk issued by Jaskowiak. No Honeybees baserunner advanced past first base.

“She threw a great game,” Minot coach Kendall Winn said. “She almost had a no-hitter until the very end. She’s a good pitcher. If we make adjustments earlier, it doesn’t go like that. We’re going to see her so many times that I think we can reflect and adjust.”

The Night Mares gave Jaskowiak plenty of run support, scoring five runs in both the second and sixth innings. Madison compiled 16 hits, with Ava Carroll, Melania Luostari and Kyra Smith all finishing with three hits. Smith also had a game-high three RBIs.

“Madison is always going to hit,” Winn said. “They’re always going to have good pitching. For us, if we play our game, we’re going to stay in it. It’s really just the team that shows up that day that is going to win. This whole league, all 42 games, whichever team shows up is who’s going to win.”

Luostari got Madson on the board with an RBI double to left in the second inning, scoring Danielle Lucey. Smith followed with an RBI single and Gretta Grassel delivered a two-run single with the bases loaded.

Leading 8-0, Madison tacked on five in the sixth to enact the mercy rule. Luostari doubled home Mickayla Tosch and Smith hit a two-run triple to deep right. Trinity Kennemer launched a two-run home run over the fence in left to cap off a 13-run night.

Kennemer, Luostari, Tele Jennings and Grassel all tallied two RBIs. Nine of the 10 Madison batters recorded a hit and eight scored runs.

“There’s a lot of things for us to work through, especially once we went down, chipping away and making adjustments and I don’t feel like we made all the adjustments, so going into tomorrow, we need to individually make some adjustments at the plate, on the mound and on the field,” Winn said. “I think tomorrow will be a better day for us.”

The Honeybees used four pitchers over the course of the game. Nadia Andarowski went the first 1 2/3 innings, allowing five runs on six hits. Minot also used Parker Rowden, Ashleigh Heiderscheit and Sarah Misner.

Minot and Madison play a doubleheader on Saturday, June 13, starting at 5:35 p.m. at Corbett Field. It is the final time during the regular season that the Honeybees will host the Night Mares.

Starting at $3.75/week.
