Legion Baseball: Vistas hold off late rally to top Devils Lake in split

The Minot Vistas had to sweat it out, but came away with a 7-6 victory over Devils Lake in the first game of a doubleheader, overcoming a seventh-inning rally by the Storm that saw the home team score three runs in their final at-bat.

The good news for the Vistas was that Devils Lake needed four runs to force extra innings, and they kept the potential game-tying run on first base. Drew Jordan got pinch-hitter Ben Brodina to ground back to the pitcher’s mound to end the threat.

Devils Lake earned a series split, winning the nightcap 7-4.

The Vistas (12-7) entered the bottom of the seventh with a 7-3 lead and recorded the first out right away in the opener. But the next three Devils Lake batters reached base safely. Will Heilman tripled and came around to score on an RBI single by Ben Larson. A walk moved Larson over to second and a wild pitch put him 90 feet from scoring. Fausten Olson grounded out to short for the second out of the inning, but it allowed Larson to score, cutting Minot’s lead to 7-5. Taydon Triepke singled home Brody Rainsberry to claw within a run before the rally ended on the next at-bat.

The Storm (7-5) nearly spoiled a big night at the plate by both Jace Price and Jordan. Price doubled twice and drove in a game-high three runs, while Jordan was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.

Jordan got the Vistas on the board in the first inning on an RBI double to left, scoring Brody Mueller. Price drove in two with his first double of the contest in the third inning to give the Vistas a 5-1 lead.

Devils Lake plated a run in both the third and fourth before the Vistas added some necessary run support with two runs in the sixth. Jordan delivered a bases-loaded single to score Peyton House and Brock Thompson drew a walk to bring in Remington Anderson.

The Storm outhit Minot 10-8. Heilman, Olson and Mason Palmer all had two hits.

Devils Lake salvaged a doubleheader split by taking advantage of five Minot errors in the finale.

The Storm took a 2-1 lead in the first following a two-out error at third off the bat of Landon Sundeen, allowing Palmer to score.

The Vistas scored a run in each of the first three innings. Price and Thompson delivered RBI singles

Devils Lake added some cushion with a three-run sixth. Tayven Wiberg singled home Palmer, and Heilman scored Brodina and Wiberg with a single to left for a 7-3 lead.

Jordan finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Mueller and Logan Dixon both doubled.

The Storm strung together 11 singles, with Wiberg, Brodina, Heilman and Olson all recording two hits.

The Vistas return to conference play when they travel to play Fargo Post 400 on Thursday, June 25, at 5:30 p.m.

Starting at $3.75/week.
