Legion Baseball: Metros hold Burlington scoreless in series sweep
The Minot Metros held the Burlington Bulldogs scoreless in eight innings over two games, limiting the home team to just three hits in a pair of victories on Thursday, June 18.
The Metros posted an 11-0 win in Game 1, which ended after five innings via mercy rule. Weather held Game 2 to just three innings, with Minot pitching a second consecutive victory with a 6-0 result. The Metros have allowed just one run during their current three-game winning streak.
Grady Weppler did a little bit of everything in the opener, tossing a complete-game two-hitter, striking out seven and walking one. He also delivered a three-run home run in the third to give the Metros a 5-0 lead.
Minot (10-5) recorded two home runs on the day, with Owen Sundahl hitting the first on the second pitch of the game. Sundahl sent an 0-1 pitch from Burlington starting pitcher Drew Roedocker over the fence in center to put the Metros on the scoreboard right away.
Sundahl finished 3-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs scored.
The Metros closed out the game with three runs in both the fourth and fifth. Ty Iverson drove in a pair of runs with a single to center, allowing Owen Meyer and Haden Bakk to score. Brady Vigested followed with an RBI single to plate Iverson.
Sundahl registered his second RBI of the game with a single in the fifth to bring home Ben Hedberg. Iverson put the mercy rule in play with a two-run single to left to give the Metros an 11-0 lead.
Iverson had a team-high four RBIs.
Collin Abernathy and Ashtyn Fisher recorded singles for the Bulldogs. Fisher was left stranded at third in the second and Abernathy at second in the fourth.
Vigested had his second multi-hit game of the series in the nightcap, going 2-for-2 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored.
Minot struck for three runs in the top of the first, with Vigested getting the offense going with a one-out RBI single to score Hedberg from second. Henrik Evanoff took a pitch to the body with the bases loaded to plate Minot’s second run of the inning and Henry Woodbeck brought in Rylan Schaan on a groundout to third.
Vigested’s double made it 4-0 in favor of the Metros after two innings before scoring two more in what would be the final inning. Liam Hieb and Schaan knocked in runs on a fielder’s choice and sac fly, respectively.
Sundahl allowed a single hit over three innings, striking out three and walking two.
Fisher had the lone hit for Burlington.
The Metros host the Mandan A’s on Monday, June 22, at Jack Hoeven Park at 2 p.m.
