Legion Baseball: Anderson smacks 2 homers in Vistas sweep of Jamestown
A day after squandering a late lead en route to being on the wrong side of a walkoff, the Minot Vistas made sure to seal the deal against Jamestown Post 14.
The Vistas scored the first five runs in the opener, including four in the first inning and never trailed, getting back in the win column with an 11-4 victory. Minot struck for two runs in the opening frame in the nightcap and held Jamestown to one hit for a 6-1 win to complete the sweep on Thursday, June 18.
With the pair of victories, the Vistas return to .500 in conference play at 4-4. It was Minot’s first conference sweep of the season.
Brody Mueller and Remington Anderson homered in the opener for the Vistas (11-6). Mueller was a perfect 4-for-4 with a home run, three doubles, an RBI and four runs scored. Minot strung together 11 hits, six going for extra bases.
Anderson led off the game with a home run on a 2-0 count, sending the pitch from Jamestown starting pitcher Zach Gaiser over the fence in center. Anderson’s homer jump-started the offense, as the Vistas plated four runs in the opening frame. Gannon Hedberg brought in a run with a single to third and Logan Dixon doubled home Hedberg later in the inning. Both hits came with two outs.
Mueller homered in the second to give the Vistas a 5-0 lead.
The Eagles (5-5) cut Minot’s lead to 5-3 after five innings before the Vistas responded with a five-run sixth to create some separation. Minot took advantage of four walks and a hit batter to score the first three runs of the inning. Gavin King delivered a run-scoring single, plating Brock Thompson.
Nick Thomas picked up the win on the mound. He pitched five innings, allowing three runs on four hits, striking out six and walking four. Mason Stewart took over the final two innings, surrendering one run on three hits, striking out three.
Thompson joined Mueller with a multi-hit game, going 2-or-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Dixon had a game-high three RBIs.
Haden Smith finished 3-for-3 with two RBIs for Jamestown.
The Vistas scored the first three runs of the nightcap and Anderson hit a three-run home run in the sixth for his second homer of the series.
Brady Johnson and Gannon Hedberg combined to throw a one-hitter. Johnson went the first 5 1/3 innings, allowing one run on one hit, striking out eight and walking four. Hedberg pitched the final 1 2/3 innings, striking out two and walking three.
The Eagles scored just one run despite putting eight runners on base. Their lone hit came on an RBI double off the bat of Nolan Maulding, bringing in Braxton Perkins. Jamestown loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth after three walks. Hedberg struck out Perkins to end the threat.
Jamestown put runners on second and third with two outs in the seventh. Hedberg once again got the out, grounding Ethan Oettle into a fielder’s choice to Mueller at shortstop.
Minot took a 2-0 lead after one inning, loading the bases with one out before a Jamestown error in left allowed Mueller to score. Mason Stewart delivered an RBI single to shortstop, plating Drew Jordan.
The Vistas added a run in the third on an RBI groundout from Dixon, bringing in Jordan for his second run of the game.
Minot travels to Devils Lake on Monday, June 22, for a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m.
