Hot Tots drop two-game series to St. Cloud

St. Cloud has had the Minot Hot Tots’ number so far this season, accounting for more than one-third of Minot’s losses this season.

The Hots Tots lost both games of a two-game weekend series with the Rox, dropping Game 1, 14-1, on Saturday, June 20, before falling 8-3 in the finale on Sunday, June 21. As a result, the Hot Tots have now lost six of eight matchups so far this season. Minot recorded eight hits over 18 innings.

The Rox (18-10) dominated the first game of the weekend on Saturday with a barrage of singles. St. Cloud strung together 13 hits, all but one being single-baggers. Dylan Westbrook had the lone extra-base hit of the contest for the home team, a two-run double in the sixth. Westbrook finished 2-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored.

St. Cloud’s top five batters in the lineup combined for seven hits, eight RBIs and six runs scored.

The Rox grabbed a 5-0 lead with a four-run second inning. St. Cloud loaded the bases with no outs and Tanner Recchio plated Carter Jorissen on a fielder’s choice to shortstop. Westbrook recorded his first two RBIs of the contest with a single to right and Colton Rother brought in Westbrook with a single to right.

After a run in the fourth, the Rox pushed their lead to 12-0 with a six-run sixth on two hits and six walks. The Hot Tots surrendered three bases-loaded walks and spotted St. Cloud another run on a wild pitch. Minot’s pitching staff issued 11 walks.

Minot’s lone run came in the seventh inning off a sac fly from Sohrab Rezaei, allowing Joe DuSell to tag and score from third base.

The Hot Tots (11-17) finished with four hits.

Westbrook, Brandon Pelechowicz and Colton Rother all had multi-hit games for the Rox. Rother had three RBIs.

Sunday’s finale was not as much of a runaway, but the Rox again used a bevy of singles to come away with the victory. Ten of their 11 hits were singles, with Brett White recording a double in the sixth.

The Rox jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings. Cole Decker got hit with a pitch with the bases loaded to force in the first run of the game and Jorissen scored Nolan Geislinger on a sac fly in the first inning. Alex Dupuy had an RBI single in the second, plating Recchio.

The Hot Tots cut the deficit to 3-2 in the third. Rezaei scored on a sacrifice bunt by Andrew Marquis and Chris Daniels scored on a wild pitch.

St. Cloud answered with two in the bottom half and went on to score five of the final six runs of the game. Nathan Belle scored on a wild pitch in the fifth for Minot’s third run.

Rother finished 4-for-5 for the Rox.

The Hot Tots travel to take on the Bismarck Larks on Monday, June 22, at 6:35 p.m.
